Expert report finds county council restructure proposal risks breaking ties with local communities

Expert analysis, published today, suggesting that the County Council’s One Somerset proposal for local government reform contains significant risks and challenges will be brought to the attention of Local Government Secretary Robert Jenrick.

PA Consulting, who were lead advisors on the Stronger Somerset business case, looked at Somerset County Council’s One Somerset case as part of a “technical assessment” required by the government consultation process.

Their report concludes that One Somerset does not present a comprehensive business case to improve the local area, describes a one-off set of savings that could be made through restructure without making the case for long-term sustainable change, lacks evidence and analysis, and risks local government becoming disconnected from the people and places it serves.

District Council Leaders are urging people to read the analysis, which has been published on the Stronger Somerset website, before having their say in the Government consultation.

Each of the district councils will agree their own response, making use of the expert findings, and submit to Government as part of the consultation process. Responses will be discussed at the following meetings:

  • Somerset West and Taunton, Tuesday 13 April
  • Sedgemoor Council meeting, Wednesday 14 April
  • Mendip District Council, Thursday 15 April
  • South Somerset District Council, Thursday 15 April.

The Government consultation closes on 19 April. To have your say, complete the online questionnaire or email unitaryconsultation@communities.gov.uk‚Äč.
